Join us in Brussels for 4 days of debate, discussion, planning, films, cultural events, and action.
In November and December 2010, the UN climate conference “COP16” will be held in Cancún, Mexico. There is a real risk that these talks will be used by rich industrialized countries, multinational businesses and international financial institutions such as the World Bank, to divide up and privatise what is left of our atmosphere, and impose their false solutions such as agrofuels, nuclear power, GMOs, carbon offsetting and the inclusion of forests in carbon markets.
In Belgium and across Europe, we face our own problems regarding climate and social justice: the risk of a new generation of coal and nuclear power plants, dangerously weak national climate policies, the harsh austerity measures being pushed as a response to the economic crisis instead of a “just transition” to new sustainable forms of production and consumption.
Activists from environmental and social movements from across Europe will be gathering in Brussels from 26th to 29th November to share ideas, experiences and visions on climate and social justice in Europe.
Start making plans to attend, and please spread this call in your networks. Let us know if you would like to attend so we can get an idea of numbers that are likely to attend.
The event is being organised by European and Belgian environmental and social movements including Friends of the Earth, Climat et Justice sociale, and La Via Campesina. And we’re still looking for groups and individuals who can help us organising the event, or who want to organise a workshop, film screening, or other activity at the event.

European Assembly for Climate Justice 
Europese Klimaatgerechtigheids Assemblee, 26-29 november, Brussel
Van 26 tot 29 november vindt in Brussel de europese Klimaatgerechtigheids Assemblee plaats. Het worden 4 dagen van debat, discussie, planning, films, cultuur en actie.
In novemeber en december vindt de VN klimaatconferentie COP16 plaats in Cancún, Mexico. Er bestaat een reël gevaar dat de gesprekken ginds gebruikt zullen worden door de rijke, geïndustrialiseerde landen, multinationale ondernemingen en internationale financiële instellingen zoals de Wereldbank, om te verdelen en privatiseren wat er over blijft van onze leefomgeving, en om ons valse oplossingen zoals agrobrandstoffen, kernenergie, GGO’s, koolstofcompensaties en het opnemen van bossen in de koolstofmarkten op te dringen.
In België en doorheen Europa worden we momenteel geconfronteerd met onze eigen problemen inzake klimaat- en sociale gerechtigheid: het risico van een nieuwe generatie van kool- en nucleaire centrales, een gevaarlijk zwak, nationaal klimaatbeleid, strenge soberheidsmaatregelen die worden opgedrongen als antwoord op de economische crisis in plaats van een “rechtvaardige transitie” naar nieuwe duurzame vormen van productie en consumptie.
Activisten van milieu- en sociale bewegingen van over gans Europa zullen daarom samenkomen in Brussel van 26 tot 29 november om ideeën, ervaringen en visies op klimaat- en sociale gerechtigheid in Europa uit te wisselen.
Maak nu reeds plannen om deel te nemen en verspreid deze oproep via je netwerken. Laat het ons weten indien je zou willen deelnemen zodat we ons een idee kunnen vormen van het aantal deelnemers dat ons zal vervoegen.
Dit evenement wordt georganiseerd door Europese en Belgische milieu- en sociale bewegingen, waaronder Friends of the Earth, Climat et Justice Sociale en La Via Campesina. We zijn nog steeds op zoek naar groepen en individuën die ons kunnen helpen bij de organisatie van dit evenement, of die een workshop, filmvoorstelling of andere activiteit willen organiseren.
Zondag 28 november ‘s namiddags zullen we de Belgische Klimaatcoalitie vervoegen voor het evenement “Zingen voor het Klimaat”, om een stem van klimaatgerechtigheid aan het gebeuren toe te voegen. Meer informatie…
Volgend op de Assemblee zullen de Young Friends of the Earth Europe een samenkomst organiseren te Brussel tijdens de 2 weken durende VN Klimaattop. Meer informatie hieromtrent volgt binnenkort.
Voor en tijdens de Assemblee zullen we boodschappen verzamelen die meegenomen zullen worden naar de VN onderhandelingen in Cancun om ze er te delen met de sociale bewegingen die ginds verzamelen, en met de onderhandelaars. Meer informatie …

I’d be so happy to put a stop on climate change by singing. Unfortunately, I’m singing for over 20 years now, mostly under the shower but sometimes on a scene, and , well, I’m sorry to say, I’m quite sure it didn’t help. If things the climate is changing the way we know it is changing, shouldn’t we be doing something more ? Something more radical, I mean going for the roots of the problem ?
